How Many Characters Can You Tweet?

Tweets, or Twitter posts, have a strict character limit. This limit used to be limited to 140 characters, but now it is increased to 280 characters for American English accounts.

This is great for Twitter users as it allows for more content to be put out. For instance, you can now say more than just what someone tweeted and your reaction to it with the new character limit!

While this is great for American English accounts, it is the disadvantage for other languages that use more characters per word. The new character limit does not fit all languages and what they require.

Unfortunately, the new characterlimit has brought about some problems. Some users have had to learn how to be concise in their tweets due to reaching the new characterlimit.

This is bad for marketing

While having a strong Twitter presence can be great for branding and marketing, having too many accounts can harm your account authority.

Having multiple accounts makes it seem like you’re trying to get more attention or sales by having multiple accounts, which is not a good look.

It also makes it harder for people to find you since they have to do more research to find you. People may even confuse you for other people with similar names which is a big no-no.

With the new limit of 280 characters, it is even more important to keep your Twitter handle short so that your tweet can fit within the character limit.

While it is difficult to let go of an account that has been part of your marketing strategy for years, it may be time to part ways if you are feeling overfilled with accounts.

You can use ‘’tweetstorm’’ app

Recently, a new app has been created to help you tweet many characters. This app is called Tweetstorm and it allows you to compose a series of tweets as one long tweet.

Anyone can download this app and use it. It is free and easy to use. All you have to do is log into your Twitter account and then press the button that says ‘Compose new tweet’ and then Tweetstorm does the rest.

The tweets that are part of the storm have to be related so don’t worry if you have several things to say, they have to relate. The app does not allow that!

This is great for writers because sometimes you may have many things to say but only so many pages or spaces available.

Break your message into several tweets

If you have a long message, consider breaking it into several tweets. This allows your audience to see your message in pieces, which makes it less daunting to read.

It also gives your followers the opportunity to engage with your account by responding to the individual tweets. It makes it easier for people to keep up with your content, as they can either read one tweet or several depending on how much time they have.

By tweeting each part of your message separately, you also promote engagement as people can respond to each tweet. This can help spread important messages and raise awareness.

If you have a long message that you want your followers to read in its entirety, then dividing it into several tweets is a good strategy. It will help prevent your followers from getting distracted by other messages and losing interest in yours.

Use images

Not everyone has an Instagram or Facebook account, but almost everyone has a camera on their phone. People love sharing pictures!

Using pictures in your tweets gives people more things to engage with. If you have a funny picture of someone or a cute picture of something, people will want to retweet it and add it to their story or story line.

You can take your own pictures or use ones from the internet. Just make sure you are authorized to post them on Twitter by using yours or taking your own.

Pictures can add some character limit as well. You can put some text on the picture itself, use emojis, or add a caption.

Try experimenting with pictures and see what gets more engagement!

Using hashtags on photos is acceptable, but try to keep it to two tags maximum for better visibility.

Keep it short and sweet

While 140 characters seems like enough to say what you want, it’s always better to leave something to the imagination. If you can convey your message in fewer characters, do it!

Many users find it difficult to tweet anything over 120 characters. If you tweet straight text without any pictures or hashtags, you will hit the limit quickly.

This is a good thing because it forces you to convey your message concisely. You have to think about how to pack in as much meaning as possible in only 140 characters.

Hashtags and pictures count towards your character count, so if you want to include those, plan accordingly.

Twitter isn’t the best place for marketing your business anymore

As Twitter continues to update its platform and limit how many characters people can tweet, it is becoming harder for businesses to get their point across.

Businesses need to be able to convey their message in a few words, but with the new changes, that will be harder to do. As of February 2018, Twitter lowered the character count from 140 to 126 for individual tweets.

This may not seem like a big difference, but when businesses have to compendate their message down even more, it gets more difficult. It will be hard for consumers to know what your business does if your tweet is so short!

Consumers are starting to pay less attention to Twitter as a result. Since so many people are busy on other social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, there is less exposure for businesses on Twitter.

Optimize your tweets

While character limits may be limiting, they can also be useful. By limiting the amount of characters you can put in a tweet, Twitter forces you to be concise.

This makes it easier to fit your message into a short tweet, which is the point of the service!

You should make an effort to optimize your tweets by making them as short and meaningful as possible. This way, your followers will receive the most information in the shortest amount of time.

If you have a long tweet that you want to post, you can either split it into several tweets or add a call-to-action or image to it to make it more worth the investment.

As with anything on social media, you want to be conscious of how much time someone spends viewing your content.

Use hashtags

Hashtags are a great way to connect with other Twitter users and find new followers. When you add a hashtag to your tweet, it allows other users to click on it and see all tweets that include that same hashtag.

This makes it easier for other users to find your content and engage with you. It also helps you gain new followers if people see your content and like it, they can follow you!

Using hashtags in your tweets is an easy way to gain exposure. People will not follow you unless they feel like they know who you are but may take a look at your content thanks to the hashtags.

You can check out what hashtags are trending and use those to add more eyes to your content.
